Questions that reveal real ASP.NET Core and C# depth. Syntax quizzes and LeetCode puzzles tell you nothing about Clean Architecture, EF Core performance, or Azure integration skill.

Walk me through how you implement a CQRS command in a Clean Architecture .NET solution -- from the API controller receiving a request to the database being updated, naming every layer and the responsibility of each.

Why this question

Tests Clean Architecture + MediatR depth: controller dispatches IMediator.Send(command), application layer has ICommandHandler<CreateOrderCommand> containing business logic, domain layer holds the Order aggregate and raises domain events, infrastructure layer has the EF Core repository implementation, and the response flows back through Result<T> or FluentValidation errors. Strong candidates draw the dependency inversion clearly -- domain knows nothing about infrastructure.

Red flag answer

I put the logic in the controller and call the DbContext directly. No understanding of CQRS, MediatR dispatch, or layer separation.

Your ASP.NET Core API is producing N+1 queries when loading a list of orders with their line items. How do you identify the problem and what are your resolution options with Entity Framework Core?

Why this question

Tests EF Core depth: enabling detailed logging with LogTo or EF Core query logging to spot N+1, Include/ThenInclude for eager loading, AsSplitQuery for cartesian product avoidance on multi-collection includes, projection to DTOs via Select (avoiding entity tracking for read-only queries), compiled queries for hot paths, and when to drop to Dapper for complex read scenarios.

Red flag answer

I would add .Include() everywhere. No understanding of query analysis, split queries, projections, or when EF Core is the wrong tool.

Tests Azure Service Bus + MassTransit depth: MassTransit consumer with IConsumer<TMessage>, idempotency via inbox pattern (recording processed message IDs in a DB), ReceiveEndpoint configuration for retry policies (UseMessageRetry), dead-letter queue consumer for poison message handling, and outbox pattern (UseEntityFrameworkOutbox) to ensure message publish is part of the same DB transaction as the state change.

Red flag answer

I would catch exceptions and not re-throw so messages don't go to dead letter. No understanding of idempotency, retry policies, or the outbox pattern.

A .NET microservice handling 10,000 concurrent requests is showing high memory allocation and GC pressure. Walk me through your profiling and optimisation approach.

Tests .NET performance depth: dotnet-trace and dotnet-counters for live metrics, PerfView or Visual Studio Diagnostic Tools for allocation profiling, identifying LOH (Large Object Heap) pressure, using Span<T> and Memory<T> to reduce heap allocations, ArrayPool<T> for buffer reuse, ValueTask vs Task for hot async paths, compiled EF Core queries, and response caching with IMemoryCache or IDistributedCache.

Strong candidates also discuss Blazor Server vs WASM trade-offs for this use case.

Red flag answer

I would use static fields to share state between components. No understanding of state management, IHttpClientFactory, or Blazor authentication patterns.

6 Red Flags in .NET Developer Interviews

Puts business logic in controllers

Service layer or controller contains business rules that should live in the domain. Candidates who cannot name any layers beyond 'controller' and 'database' have not worked in maintainable .NET codebases.

No async/await discipline

Uses .Result or .Wait() on async methods (causing deadlocks in ASP.NET Core), ignores CancellationToken propagation, or mixes sync and async code paths inconsistently.

EF Core by cargo-cult only

Can scaffold a model but cannot explain lazy vs eager loading, does not know what N+1 queries are, and has never used AsNoTracking() for read-only queries. EF Core misuse is the most common .NET performance killer.

No understanding of DI lifetime scoping

Registers everything as Singleton or does not understand Transient vs Scoped vs Singleton. Injecting a Scoped service into a Singleton (captive dependency) is a common production bug.

Cannot write a meaningful integration test

Has never used WebApplicationFactory<TProgram> or Testcontainers. Tests only unit-test isolated classes -- no end-to-end HTTP + database integration test experience.

Azure = 'just click deploy' experience

Has deployed to Azure App Service via the portal but cannot configure a YAML Azure DevOps pipeline, set up Key Vault references, or explain App Service vs Container Apps vs AKS trade-offs.
