Why Open IT Freelancers

Node.js Hiring That
Actually Works.

Node.js is the most-used web framework globally - and the most impersonated. We fix that with live event-loop screens, framework matching, and a single transparent fee.

72 hrsFirst shortlist

Matched in 72 Hours - React + Node.js Pairs Available

Node.js powers 70%+ of full-stack JS projects alongside React. Post your brief and specify both layers - we match a single engineer who can own the Express or NestJS backend AND the React frontend if needed, or a dedicated backend specialist. 72 hours either way.

Top 3%Acceptance rate

Top 3% - Node.js Is the Most Fake-Claimed JS Skill

Every Node.js engineer on Upwork claims Express, async/await, and TypeScript. We screen the event loop, Promise chaining, memory leak scenarios, and framework-specific architecture. Engineers who know the syntax but not the runtime behaviour do not get through.

15%Flat fee, always

Flat 15% - Cheaper Than Toptal on Every Node.js Hire

Toptal's opaque markup on Node.js developers typically runs 40-60% above the developer's actual rate. We charge a single flat 15%. On a $80/hr engineer over 12 weeks that is $9,000+ saved - before even counting the faster matching time.

7+Frameworks covered

Framework-Matched - Express vs NestJS vs Fastify

A NestJS architect is not an Express developer is not a Fastify performance engineer. We match on your actual architecture - NestJS for enterprise TypeScript, Express for flexibility and legacy codebases, Fastify for high-throughput services. Wrong framework costs weeks.

No Lock-In - 14-Day Notice

No long-term contracts. No exit penalties. Engagements run on 14-day notice. You own 100% of all code, APIs, schemas, and documentation through a tri-party contract signed on day one.

100%Managed engagements

Managed Delivery - API Integrations Demand Accountability

API integration projects are notorious for silent failures - a webhook stops firing, a third-party contract changes, a race condition surfaces in production. Weekly delivery reports, milestone tracking, and dispute resolution are standard on every engagement.

Frameworks & Stack

Express, NestJS, or Fastify? We Match the Right One.

The most expensive Node.js hiring mistake is matching the wrong framework to the project. Here is the decision framework - and how we match engineers to your exact stack.

Express.js

Minimal, flexible - the industry default

Best for: REST APIs, legacy codebases, rapid prototyping, teams that prefer convention-free setup
  • Largest Node.js ecosystem - virtually every npm package has an Express integration
  • Minimal core - you choose your middleware, ORM, and validation library
  • Ubiquitous - every Node.js developer knows it, onboarding new engineers is easy
  • Battle-tested at scale: IBM, Accenture, and thousands of production APIs run Express
  • WSGI-style middleware chain is simple to reason about and debug
✓ Choose when: You are building a REST API, migrating from another backend, or want the fastest possible ramp-up for new engineers on the team.
✗ Avoid when: Your project requires enterprise-grade structure, dependency injection, or strong TypeScript conventions - NestJS will save you months of scaffolding.

NestJS

Enterprise TypeScript - opinionated and structured

Best for: Enterprise APIs, microservices, TypeScript-first teams, complex domain logic with DI
  • Built on TypeScript - full type safety from controllers to database layer
  • Angular-inspired DI container - clean, testable, modular architecture out of the box
  • First-class microservices support - TCP, NATS, Kafka, RabbitMQ transports built in
  • GraphQL, WebSockets, CQRS, and event sourcing modules maintained officially
  • Consistent project structure - any NestJS engineer can navigate any NestJS codebase
✓ Choose when: You are building a complex product with many services, a TypeScript-first team, or you need enterprise features (CQRS, event sourcing, microservices) without building them from scratch.
✗ Avoid when: You need a lightweight single-purpose API or your team is not comfortable with TypeScript decorators - the learning curve is steeper than Express.

Fastify

High-throughput - when raw performance matters

Best for: High-throughput APIs, performance-critical microservices, teams benchmarking RPS
  • 80K+ requests/second - 3-5× faster than Express on equivalent hardware
  • Built-in JSON schema validation with Ajv - automatic serialisation and OpenAPI generation
  • Plugin system with strict encapsulation - no accidental dependency leaks between plugins
  • Low overhead logging with pino - structured JSON logs without performance penalty
  • TypeScript support built-in - no @types/ packages needed
✓ Choose when: You are building a service where raw throughput or low latency is a hard requirement - payment processors, real-time data APIs, or anything that runs benchmarks.
✗ Avoid when: Your team is new to Node.js or you want the largest talent pool for future hiring. Express engineers are 5× more common than Fastify specialists.

Hiring Guide

How to Hire a Node.js Developer Without Getting Burned

The event loop, async patterns, and framework internals are where real Node.js engineers separate from imposters. Here is the playbook our senior engineers use.

6 Questions That Expose Fake Node.js Experience

1

Explain the Node.js event loop. What is the difference between the microtask queue and the macrotask queue - and why does it matter in production?

Why ask it: This is the most fundamental Node.js concept. Engineers who don't understand the event loop write code that blocks I/O, starves the queue, or causes subtle ordering bugs in async flows.

Red flag: Cannot explain why process.nextTick runs before Promise.then, or confuses setTimeout with setImmediate.

2

You have a memory leak in a Node.js API that manifests only under load. Walk me through how you would diagnose and fix it.

Why ask it: Memory leaks are the #1 production Node.js failure mode. Strong candidates know heap snapshots, clinic.js, --inspect, and common patterns: uncleaned event listeners, closure captures, large in-memory caches.

Red flag: Suggests increasing server RAM as the fix. Has never used a profiler or heap snapshot tool.

3

Design a NestJS module architecture for a multi-tenant SaaS API - auth, user management, billing, and notifications. How do you handle module isolation and shared services?

Why ask it: Tests architectural thinking for the most common NestJS use case. Strong candidates will discuss feature modules, global modules, dynamic modules, and the DI token strategy for multi-tenancy.

Red flag: Describes everything in a single AppModule. Does not know what @Global() or forRootAsync() does.

4

How would you implement rate limiting in a distributed Express API with 10 server instances behind a load balancer?

Why ask it: In-memory rate limiting is the most common interview pass/production fail scenario. Every distributed Node.js API needs Redis-backed rate limiting - candidates must understand why local counters fail.

Red flag: Proposes a local Map or in-memory counter. Has not thought about what happens across multiple processes.

5

Explain how you would scale a Socket.io real-time app from one server to multiple horizontally. What are the failure modes?

Why ask it: Horizontal Socket.io scaling requires Redis adapter + sticky sessions - both of which are commonly missed. Tests whether the candidate has actually run WebSocket in production vs just a tutorial.

Red flag: Does not know the Redis adapter exists. Has not thought about sticky sessions or connection drops during deploys.

6

What is the difference between Prisma's findMany with include vs select, and when does each cause N+1 problems?

Why ask it: Prisma is the dominant Node.js ORM and N+1 is its most common performance trap. This tests whether the candidate understands the generated SQL, not just the Prisma API.

Red flag: Has not used Prisma's query logging or explain plan output. Cannot describe what SQL a nested include generates.

6 Red Flags That Disqualify a Node.js Developer

High

Cannot write a working async Express route with try/catch error handling from memory

Any genuine Express developer has written hundreds of routes. This is day-one knowledge.

High

Claims 'Node.js is single-threaded so you don't need to worry about concurrency'

Incorrect and dangerous. Race conditions in async Node.js code are a real production problem.

High

Lists NestJS on CV but cannot explain what a Nest provider or DI token is

NestJS's entire value proposition is its DI container. Not knowing it means they copy-pasted a generator.

High

Uses res.send() inside a Promise .catch() without returning - causes 'headers already sent' errors

This is a classic Express bug. Any engineer with 6+ months of Express experience has hit this.

Medium

CV lists Express, NestJS, Fastify, Socket.io, GraphQL, gRPC, and Serverless with equal depth

Senior engineers are deep in 1-2 frameworks. Equal-confidence lists signal CV padding.

Medium

Has never written a test for async code - no mocking of external HTTP calls or database queries

Async testing is harder than sync testing. An engineer without this skill will push untestable code.

Who Hires Node.js Developers

Node.js for Every Stage - Startup to Enterprise

From a 2-person founding team shipping a mobile app API to a 500-person company building microservices - here is how Node.js hiring works at each stage.

Startups

Mid-level$65-$90/hr

Ship an MVP backend fast. Node.js is the default choice for startup APIs - fast to build, cheap to run, and JavaScript across the full stack if your frontend is React. Our engineers build Express or NestJS backends and hand you a production-ready, documented API.

Sample brief: "We need an Express REST API for our mobile app MVP - auth, user profiles, push notifications, and Stripe billing. 10 weeks."

Scale-Ups

Senior$85-$130/hr

Your Express monolith is slowing the team down and the API is getting slow under load. We match senior Node.js engineers who specialise in NestJS migrations, performance profiling, Redis caching strategy, and breaking monoliths into services without stopping feature delivery.

Sample brief: "Our Express API P99 latency is 800ms. We need a senior engineer to diagnose, add Redis caching, and refactor the slowest endpoints. 8 weeks."

Enterprise

Senior / Lead$100-$160/hr

NestJS microservices, CQRS, event sourcing, and full managed delivery with weekly reporting. Enterprise buyers need accountability for Node.js API services - not just an engineer they manage alone. We provide both the talent and the delivery structure.

Sample brief: "We need a NestJS architect for 9 months to design our new microservices platform - 4 services, Kafka event bus, PostgreSQL, and full TypeScript. Must integrate with our existing Java backend."

Agencies

Mid-level$55-$90/hr

You win the client project, we staff the Node.js engineers. No employment overhead, no IR35 headaches. Our engineers drop into your team's workflow, follow your Git conventions, and deliver to your sprint cadence.

Sample brief: "We need 2 Node.js engineers for a 4-month client project - one for REST API, one for real-time Socket.io features. Both must be TypeScript-first and comfortable with AWS."

Sample Node.js Project Briefs We Match Every Week

FAQ

Common Questions About Hiring Node.js Developers

Everything founders and engineering managers ask us before their first Node.js engagement.

Every engineer passes a live coding screen covering the Node.js event loop, async/await and Promise patterns, REST and GraphQL API design, and a framework-specific challenge (Express middleware chains, NestJS dependency injection, or Fastify plugin architecture). We screen for real production knowledge including async error handling, memory leak scenarios, and distributed system patterns - not syntax quizzes. The live Node.js screen tests event loop blocking identification - engineers must diagnose why a CPU-bound synchronous operation stalls an HTTP server under load. We test async/await versus Promise.all concurrency patterns, Express middleware chain ordering (error middleware, body parsing sequence), and NestJS module encapsulation and dependency injection scope. Engineers who have only used Node as a scripting runtime without understanding the single-threaded event model do not pass.

You receive 3 shortlisted, pre-vetted Node.js engineers within 72 business hours of submitting your brief. Our AI scans 350+ engineers and a senior Node.js engineer validates each match manually for framework fit, TypeScript depth, seniority, and timezone.

Developer rates range from $20 to $160 per hour depending on seniority and region. Open IT Freelancers adds a flat 15% management fee on top of the developer rate. There is no matching fee - you pay $0 to receive your shortlist.

We match on your full framework and runtime stack. Engineers specialise in Express.js (REST APIs, middleware architecture), NestJS (enterprise TypeScript, DI, microservices, CQRS), Fastify (high-throughput APIs, plugin system), Socket.io (real-time applications, horizontal scaling), and serverless Node.js (AWS Lambda, Vercel Edge). Tell us your stack in the brief.

A Node.js developer specialises in the backend: API design, database layer, real-time systems, authentication, and server-side logic. A full-stack developer covers both the React frontend and Node.js backend. If you already have a frontend team and need a strong API engineer, hire a Node.js specialist. If you need one engineer to own front-to-back, see our Hire Full-Stack Developers page.

Yes - Node.js is the dominant choice for real-time systems. We have engineers who specialise in Socket.io (chat, notifications, live dashboards, collaborative editing), WebSocket servers, SSE for one-directional streaming, and Redis pub/sub for horizontal Socket.io scaling across multiple server instances.

Yes. Engagements can be as short as 2-4 weeks (for an API sprint, integration, or audit) or as long as 24+ months. The only commitment is a 14-day notice period to end an engagement, with no early termination penalties.

If within the first 14 days the engineer is not the right fit, we replace them at no extra cost. No arguments, no delays - we activate the replacement process within 24 hours. After 14 days, engagements run on 14-day notice.

You own 100% of all code, APIs, schemas, tests, and documentation. Ownership transfers automatically on work approval through our tri-party contract signed on day one. There are no platform licensing fees or IP retained by the engineer or Open IT Freelancers.

We screen for codebase navigation and legacy code capability. In the brief, tell us your current setup - Express version, ORM, auth strategy, test coverage - and we match engineers who have worked on similar codebases and can ramp up without forcing a rewrite.

Toptal's process takes 1-2 weeks and their margin on developer rates typically runs 40-60%. We return a shortlist in 72 hours with a flat 15% fee. Our live Node.js screen covers event loop, async patterns, and framework-specific architecture - not generic algorithm tests. We also include managed delivery (weekly reports, milestone tracking) as standard.

Timezone is part of our matching criteria. Specify your team's working hours in the brief and we only shortlist engineers with sufficient overlap - typically 4+ hours of shared working time. We have engineers across Eastern Europe, South Asia, Latin America, South-East Asia, and Western Europe.
